The Medicine Hat Tigers scored three goals on a single five minute power play on the way to a 7-1 win over the Seattle Thunderbirds on Saturday night, closing out their six-game U.S. road trip with a fifth straight win.

SGC opened the scoring in the first with a breakaway goal with a real nifty head fake, jumping on a loose puck and beating the Seattle defence to make it 1-0. Noah Kosick tied it for the Thunderbirds around seven minutes later, his sixth of the season and it was 1-1 after one, with the Tigers outshooting Seattle 12-7.

The second period turned the game around. Carter Casey stopped all 12 shots he faced and SGC was awarded a penalty shot but was denied by Grayson Malinoski. Then a big scrum at halfway through the second led to a five minute power play for the Tigers and they scored three times on it. That’s right, three times on a single power play. SGC deflected a shot from Liam Ruck, Tyson Moss put away his own rebound and Luke Cozens fired a one-timer to make it 4-1. Liam and Markus Ruck assisted on all three goals and the Tigers outshot Seattle 20-12 in the period.

The power play kept rolling in the third. SGC completed his hat trick early in the third with his sixth of the year and Josh Evaschesen scored his ninth shortly after with assists from Yaroslav Bryzgalov and Arvid Drott, the Tigers’ fifth power play goal of the night. Jake Burmis added his third of the season late, to make it 7-1. The Tigers outshot Seattle 47-27, went 5 for 5 on the power play and killed all three Seattle power plays with Casey making 26 saves.

SGC was named first star for his hat trick. Liam Ruck took second star with five assists, his second five-point night in his last three games after the five-point game in Portland on Wednesday and Kosick got third star for Seattle. Markus Ruck added four assists and now has 26 points on the year, while Liam has 22, Cozens 18, Evaschesen 15 and Dayton Reschny 14.

The Tigers finished the six-game trip 5-1. They are now 11-5-1 with 23 points through 17 games, good for second in the Central Division behind Red Deer, who have 27 points and ahead of Calgary, who have 21.

Next up, the Tigers return to Co-op Place for the first time since October 24 to host the Calgary Hitmen on Friday, November 13.
