The Medicine Hat Tigers scored four times in the first period, including two goals just 10 seconds apart and two more just eight seconds apart on their way to a 5-1 win over the Tri-City Americans on Halloween night.
Josh Evaschesen got things started midway through the first period with his seventh goal of the season with a one-timer from Yaroslav Bryzgalov. Ten seconds later, Arvid Drott got a tap-in from Brayden Holberton to make it 2-0. Later in the period, Shaeffer Gordon-Carroll picked up a rebound off Riley Steen late in the first and eight seconds after that, Markus Ruck fired a wrist shot from the left circle to make it 4-0. The Tigers outshot the Americans 11-3 in the opening frame.
Tri-City pushed back in the second, outshooting Medicine Hat 11-8 and got on the board on the power play when Dylan LeBret scored early in the second. Holberton, who has been a physical presence for the Tigers on this trip, dropped the gloves with LeBret later in the period and the Tigers took a 4-1 lead into the third.
Early in the third, a goal off Evaschesen’s skate was waved off for a kicking motion but Kadon McCann scored on the very next shift anyway. McCann sneaked in behind the Tri-City defence and beat Xavier Wendt on a centering pass from Drott early into the period to make it 5-1. Carter Casey made 25 saves on 26 shots and the Tigers killed six of seven penalties while going 0 for 2 on the power play.
Gordon-Carroll was named first star with a goal and an assist, Tri-City defenceman Jakub Vanecek took second star and Dayton Reschny rounded out the stars with an assist. Evaschesen’s goal moved him to 12 points on the year while Ruck leads the team with 16 points. It was the second straight win for the Tigers on their U.S. road trip after a 4-3 shootout win over Spokane on Friday that followed the 7-2 loss in Wenatchee.
The win moves the Tigers to 8-5-1 with 17 points through 14 games, which puts them second in the Central Division. Red Deer leads with 20 points and Calgary sits third with 16.
Next up, the Tigers play three more games on the road trip, starting in Portland on Wednesday, then Everett on Friday and Seattle on Saturday.
